National Privacy Research Strategy, WPF participant

WPF is participating in the National Privacy Research Strategy workshop, which will be held in Washington DC this February.  This workshop is part of a broader effort from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Last October, OSTP asked federal agencies to prepare a draft National Privacy Research Strategy, with the objective to guide and prioritize federal R&D investments in privacy-enhancing technologies and solutions. At this time, the National Science Foundation issued a Request for Information to the public to ask for guidance.

WPF responded to the National Science Foundation’s RFI. In our comments, we requested a focus on what we call “statistical parity,” which means ensuring fairness throughout the statistical process, from signals to data use. (not just focusing on algorithms.) We also requested the NSF hold a workshop to air stakeholder perspectives and work on solutions. We are pleased that the workshop will be held. The Federal Cybersecurity R&D Senior Steering Group is guiding the workshop.

Dates: Feb. 18-20

Location: Washington, DC metro area
